These are governed through the provisions of the Singapore Income Tax Act 1947. Primary difference between an investment holding company and an investment dealing company are that a holding company primarily derives it income from passive income sources and dealing company derives its income from direct income sources (Dyreng, Hoopes Wilde, 2016). This is because an investment holding company is the owner of investments like shares and properties on long term basis and gets investment income such as rental, dividend or interest income. The basic purpose of such company is holding investment. On the other hand an investment dealing company also holds investments in form of shares and property however they are treated as a trading stock and income is derived by selling and purchasing such investments (TAX@SG, 2018). Application of the SITA on the companies The SITA is the primary legislation which deals with provisions in relation of computation of tax towards these companies. This section of the report deals with the implications of subsection 10 (1)(a), 10E, 10(1)(f) and 10(1)(d) on these companies in relation to their tax implications. In relation to an IH company income tax is payable on incomes which have accrued or been derived from Singapore or income which have been attained from outside Singapore in Singapore such as income from foreign received in Singapore. The major form of income which is gained by a IH are dividends and interest dealt by s10 (1)(d) and Rental income which is dealt with by s10(1)(f) of the SITA. In relation to dividends a one-tier corporate tax system is adopted by Singapore. The final tax is the tax which has been paid by a Singapore company in relation to its chargeable income. Thus all dividends which are paid are paid by a corporate organization in Singapore in the hand of the shareholders are exempted from tax. In relation to foreign sourced dividend income the income which has been attained in Singapore is to be taxed at 17% which is the present rate of corporate tax unless an exemption of tax has been provided. Incomes from dividends are categorized into four groups for the purpose of tax treatment. The first group consists of shares which are non-income producing, the second group deals with shares through which tax-exempt dividend income is generated, the third group consists of shares which produce income and is remitted to Singapore during the taxable year and shares which produce income but are not remitted to Singapore (IRAS, 2018). Expenses which do not fall under the category of direct or statutory expenses are known a s indirect expenses. These expenses are that of transport expenses and director fees. Concession in relation to such expenses have been provided by the IRAS however it is restricted to 5% of the overall turnover value if it is less than the actual expenses (IRAS, 2018). In case of deductible expenses in a investment dealing company comparatively less restrictive approach is taken as in a investment holding company. The rules for determining their deductibility of expenses are as follows. Any expense or outgoing which has been incurred in relation to the income producing investment are to be deducted. However these are only deducted against the incomes which have been derived from such investments these provisions have been provided through Section 10E of the SITA. The balance which is not eligible to be set off has to be disregarded. Capital allowance In relation to the nature of an investment holding company it is not allowed to make a claim for capital allowance as the incomes which is made by it is only from passive sources such as rent and interest. No benefit can be provided to an investment holding company which may arise out of the Productivity and Innovation Credit Scheme. This type of company is also not allowed to take group relief for the purpose of setting off losses against other organization within the group. In addition any unutilized losses occurring during the tear are not allowed to be brought forward (IRAS, 2018). An investment holding company which has been incorporated after February 25 2013 is not allowed to make a claim tax exception for startup companies. They only enjoy partial exemption of taxes up-to $300,000 which is for the first $10000 at 75% and the remaining 290,000 at 50%. On the other hand investment dealing is allowed to make a claim of capital allowance under the SITA for the use of plant and machinery towards deriving the income. The balance of an allowance shall not be considered which cannot be set off in the year. As the investment dealing company indulges in trade it has the right to enjoy the benefits under Productivity and Innovation Credit Scheme. Tax exceptions can also be claimed by the company in the first three assessment year. However the company is not able to claim group relief as capital allowance and losses which are not utilized are not considered (IRAS, 2018). This fact alone is enough to explore the hidden qualities of music and see what might be possible with the directed use of it for a specific purpose. For example, when your football team scores a touchdown, the band is not going to play a waltz, they are going to play something upbeat and exciting. Just as this is true, it is also true that music has wellness properties to it. The first one to explore is rhythm. A very simple, but effective illustration of this is the song we learn as small children. Read the following lyrics and see how it makes you feel: ‘If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands.’ This is usually followed by two claps of the hands and gets children excited. In more sophisticated terms: it activates their minds and causes them to move around. My point is this: without the use of any musical instrument, the song will still get children excited. Why? This is a good example because a term used by Mayor Nagin of New Orleans to encourage its people to get back to what the city was known for before Katrina, namely a particular type of music called ‘Funk.† With most listeners not knowing the reference he gave to the music genre, he found himself apologizing to those who took it as a racial remark. The term he used was ’Chocolate City.’ This is actually a song performed by a band called Parliament. It was purely a genre of music that was popular in the seventies and found a home away from home in New Orleans (amazon.com). The American Music Therapy Association, founded in 1998, boasts of 3800 memberships to present date. Their sole purpose for existing is the development of the therapeutic use of music in rehabilitation, special education, and community settings (AMA website). When study is devoted to this unique quality of music, scholars are finding many different ways to use it to help medicine in its fight against fatigue, stress, and even muscle tension. The media has played on the subject of music and what it means to people in everyday life, but in their action movies you expect some sort of high-powered music to enthrall you into their entertainment. Love songs are called love songs because of the interpretation of love in direct correlation to the song. It can be the lyrics, but it doe not have to be; it can simply be the basic rhythm that soothes or pumps the individual up. John A. Carpente, MA, NRMT, CMT at the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy published a case study involving a boy with multiple impairments and how he was able to help him communicate through music therapy. Music played a key role in rehabilitating this boy into a person who could communicate on a level that previously was impossible. The only thing that will ascertain these answers, and quite possibly create more, is to get involved in the study of some particular art that affects you. It is quite possible that the true depth of healing in the arts is just beginning to be realized by more than just a crazy few. What is just as interesting is the level we understand other aspects of life and how far we have missed the medicinal properties of the arts in general. People tend to behave strangely when they are deriving some medicinal answers through the medium of art. For example, chick flicks is a genre of movies that helps to build relationships simply because the male partner in a relationship is more likely to watch one with his partner. While experiencing the ups and downs of the movie the relationships on screen get compared and contrasted to the real relationship of the couple watching the movie. One reason that nightclubs fair well on the weekend is because relationships are in need of a place to let off the stress of a busy week in the office and this is really a constructive way to do it. This is not to say that nightclubs will solve all relational problems, but they do offer the dancer a way to release pent-up emotions. Just as people find themselves hooked on drugs or alcohol and need to replenish what the body craves, so does the body crave natural ways to relieve the pressures of life. Think about the elements involved. For example, Asians that have moved here have a dream of a better life or education or have some personal reason for moving to America, and they recognize their limitations caused by the lack of understanding English as opposed to their native language, but they come anyway. They come because of the benefits we, as Americans, can offer them. However, they also offer some benefits to us. One of these is music. The use of sound as a healing tool dates back thousands of years. Now, the field of sound healing is gaining considerable attention, as sound pioneers promote the healing benefits of music, tones and instruments. Jonathan Goldman, director of the Sound Healers Association, is one of the leading experts in the field (Dykeman). It is no secret that music can soothe, excite, incite, and even assist in hypnosis, so to say that music can be used as a healing tool is not as far a jump as one would think. Given the right atmosphere, almost always provided by music, you can move people to do things they would not do otherwise.If eno ugh thought is given to the subject and how it plays in our everyday lives we discover that we use it to announce a birth, to celebrate a birthday, New Year, Christmas, and almost every other holiday that can be thought of; we use it in church, at weddings, and funerals and of course, lest we forget, graduation. To think of life without it would be like going into the forest and not hearing the birds singing or the wind blowing through the trees. We are so inundated with music that trying to view life without it is nearly impossible. To ask what life would be like without music would be to try to describe a bird without a chirp. When Goldman was asked by Dykeman to describe sound healing he explained something that was a unique description of life. First, let me point out that modern science is now in agreement with what the ancient mystics have told us—that everything is in a state of vibration, from the electrons moving around the nucleus of an atom, to planets and distant galaxies moving around stars. As they’re creating movement, they are creating vibration, and this vibration can be perceived of as sound. So everything is creating a sound, including the sofa that we’re sitting on, or this table, or our bodies. Every organ, every bone, every tissue, every system of the body is creating a sound. When we are in a state of health, we’re like an extraordinary orchestra that’s playing a wonderful symphony of the self. But what happens if the second violin player loses her sheet music? She begins to play out of tune, and pretty soon the entire string section sounds bad. Pretty soon, in fact, the entire orchestra is off. This is a metaphor for disease (Dykeman). If this is true, and from all scientific proof it is, then healing can take a much less invasive approach to the process. Obviously, there are medical procedures that cannot be replaced by sound, or music healing, but the recovery process can be a lot less stressful and painful if applied properly. It should be stated that music can and is being used in a negative sense, as the interview with Goldman reveals, and since that has been proven to be true, all that is left is for people in the medical field to tap into the resources they have at their disposal and prove the opposite can also be true of music. Some surgeons like to have music played while their in surgery for various reasons, so in a directly connected way, music is already playing a bit-part in the healing process of the human body. From a purely medicinal viewpoint, nurses in hospitals are the more authoritative voice. Many of them will tell you that the healing process is the hardest facet to having surgery. The doctors did their part, but as far as the patient is concerned, the nurses that tend to them while healing are the ones who should really get applause. The doctor had a captive audience; the nurses have to interact with us while we are in pain for what the doctor did to us in the operating room. Many patients, when telling of their hospital experience, will invariably say something about the nurses who tended to their needs while healing. Florence Nightingale described the major responsibility of nursing as that of putting the patient in the best place for nature to work upon him or her for healing (Nightingale.1859/1946, p. 6). Music can be used to positively manipulate the hospital environment to foster spiritual, psychological and physical healing. Sound is an integral part of any environment and may have an impact on health and well being. Florence Nightingale provided music as part of the healing process for injured soldiers in the Crimea, and described how her nurses used voice and flute melodies to provide a beneficial effect on soldiers in pain (McCaffery). The nurse, who is the really the unsung hero in the healing process, should be the focus of energy to the development of every possible avenue that can be placed at their disposal to help alleviate some of the inevitable tension that will be felt as there are usually too few nurses available in ratio to the patients as they come to recover in a hospital room. Everybody listens to music. The argument could be made that what is music to one could be nothing more than noise to someone else, given all we know about the arts; the time that every college student has to endure in fine arts classes as general education classes needed to obtain any type of degree; given the fact that colleges pay fine art teachers real money to teach something that is most thought of as â€Å"a class I have to take,† music should be given way more attention than it has from the medical field in the past. The argument holds merit only as the teachers, doctors and nurses allow. People may not understand languages because they are separated by large bodies of water, but music can cause them to have common ground. Just because the language is different there does not have to be a barrier with music. Again, facing ambivalence from the skeptic, the nurse has to be the one who walks into the patient’s room when they are cranky due to the pain of healing. Why not make their job easier by providing some training, as part of the regular curriculum, in music and its various uses in the field of medicine. With all they face, this could cause the barrier to be removed. Maybe it is not the universal language, but it is ranks right up there with the top ones. According to Alderman (2000), they can influence the motivation and learning of students. This influence can be positive or negative. As a student feels accepted or a sense of belonging, they will adopt the goals and values of the school. Hence falling an easy prey to the awaiting threats outside. Children are also stressed when parents are not understanding and pressure them to study something which is not of their interest . Parents who subject their own desires and ambitions on their children can cause a lo t of unnecessary pressure on them. Peer pressure and the need to proof oneself in order to be accepted is also another factor why the teenagers so easily succumb to the social ills around them.Constant innovation and development also provide boundless network which promotes extreme socialisation among our teenagers. Hence the exposure to all the unwanted elements in the society! Teenagers who do not know how to cope with stress, resort to these unwelcome means of escapism. We have seen some of the main reasons of why the social ills are spreading like an epidemic amongst our teenagers. What can we do to help them or to curb these social ills? There are a few very important things that can be done to nip the bud from the beginning itself.Firstly,the role of a family is very important . Parents who are responsible,who allocate enough quality time with their children can be a source of confidence for their children. Children will be able to rely on their parents for any advice and grow up to be a confident and secured person. These children often will not fall prey to the social ills as they are able to differentiate between good and bad and have no need for any form of escapism as they get enough love from their parents. Parents also must make sure that their children do ot lack of religious knowledge. As we know, all religion wants its followers to be a good human and abide by the rules. So if a child is given enough religious education and is taught to respect the humankind then,the chances of him or her resorting to violence is slim. Too much freedom and too much money given to teenagers will only mean trouble. Therefore parents should act wisely and explain to their youngsters why sometimes they cannot have whatever they want and why they must always obtain their parents’ permission before going out.Parents should always be aware of their child’s whereabouts but at the same time should not also be too strict and practice veto power at home. The y should be able to compromise,understand and respect their child’s feelings too. Maintaining a healthy relationship with children is an important measure in reducing these social ills amongst teenagers. Otherwise most teenagers will choose to rebel against their parents and try to prove to everyone that they are in control of their lives Besides the role of family ,the role of teachers and counsellors in schools is also very important in preventing social ills amongst teenagers.A teacher must always be sensitive to a child’s problem . A teacher must be able to gain a child’s trust in order for the child to confide in her or him. A teacher must make it her responsibility to solve a child’s problem and not be someone who simply wants to teach but is not much bothered about the child’s affair. Teachers can help a lot to curb these social ills if they play their role kindly and caringly. They should notice things and try to help the youngsters by send ing them to a counsellor or by counselling them themselves.While teaching in class , a teacher must always stress on the moral values and teach their students to avoid falling prey to bad influences. The education department and the mass media must always remind these teenagers to avoid doing all these illegal activities and the repercussions should anything unpleasant happen. The enforcement agencies can be invited to give talks and show slides of what is happening and how bad it can turn into,to create awareness amongst teenagers. A lot of opportunities must be created to allow teenagers to involve hemselves in activities such as outdoor games,indoor games,dancing and drawing classes,photography clubs and some social services that will divert the attention of these teenagers . The teenagers will not only be occupied but will also benefit from these extra activities. This healthy activities can be organised by the residential commitees or by the â€Å"ketua kampung†. Healthy competition with lucrative prizes can be held to attract these teenagers. The State government and the district office can help with these measures.Money used to cure the victims of the social ills in the form of rehabilitation centres and their medication can be put into a more healthy usage such as the above mentioned activities. After all one must agree that â€Å"Prevention is better than Cure†As a conclusion , everybody has to play an important role in eradicating social ills amongst teenagers . Biography of Millard Fillmore The 13th President of the United States

Millard Fillmore (Jan. 7, 1800 - March 8, 1874) served as Americas 13th president from  July 9, 1850, to March 4, 1853, having taken over after the death of his predecessor, Zachary Taylor. While in office, the Compromise of 1850 was passed which staved off the Civil War for eleven more years. His other major accomplishment while president was the opening of Japan to trade through the Treaty of Kanagawa.   Millard Fillmores Childhood and Education Millard Fillmore grew up on a small farm in New York to a relatively poor family. He received a basic education. He was then apprenticed to cloth makers while at the same time educating himself until he enrolled at the New Hope Academy in 1819. Over time, Fillmore alternatively studied law and taught school until he was admitted to the bar in 1823. Family Ties Fillmores parents were  Nathaniel Fillmore a New York farmer and  Phoebe Millard Fillmore. He had five brothers and three sisters. On February 5, 1826, Fillmore married  Abigail Powers who had been his teacher despite being only one year older than him. Together they had two children,  Millard Powers and Mary Abigail. Abigail  died in 1853 after fighting pneumonia. In 1858, Fillmore married Caroline Carmichael McIntosh who was a wealthy widow. She died after him on August 11, 1881.   Millard Fillmores Career Before the Presidency Fillmore became active in politics soon after being admitted to the bar. He served in the New York State Assembly from 1829-31. He was then elected to Congress in 1832 as a Whig and served until 1843. In 1848, he became the Comptroller of New York State. He was then elected Vice President under Zachary Taylor and took office in 1849. He succeeded to the presidency upon Taylors death on July 9, 1850. He was sworn in before a joint session of Congress Chief Justice William Cranch.   Events and Accomplishments of Millard Fillmores Presidency Fillmores administration lasted from July 10, 1850 - March 3, 1853. The most significant event of his time in office was the Compromise of 1850. This consisted of five separate laws: California was admitted as a free state.Texas received compensation for giving up claims to western lands.Utah and  New Mexico  were established as territories.Fugitive Slave Act  was passed which required the federal government to help return runaway slaves.The slave trade  was abolished in the District of Columbia. This act temporarily held off the  Civil War  for a time. The Presidents support of the  Compromise of 1850  cost him his partys nomination in 1852. Also during Fillmores time in office,  Commodore Matthew Perry  created the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854. This treaty with the Japanese allowed America to trade in two Japanese ports and was important for allowing trade with the far east. Post-Presidential Period Soon after Fillmore left the Presidency, his wife and daughter died. He took off on a trip to Europe. He ran for the presidency in 1856 for the Know-Nothing Party, an anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant party. He lost to James Buchanan. He no longer was active on the national scene but was still involved in public affairs in Buffalo, New York until his death on March 8, 1874. Historical Significance Millard Fillmore was only in office for less than three years. However, his acceptance of the Compromise of 1850 averted the Civil War for another eleven years. His support of the Fugitive Slave Act caused the Whig Party to split in two and caused the downfall of his national political career.
